Trading on alibaba.com?

Question

I have an account on alibaba.com, I know it is a place where b2b meets. I have a business(a kinder garden stuff), but not something I can sell in Alibaba.com. Here are my few questions:

1. Though I still have anything to sell, can I still buy on alibaba.com?

2. How do I have to choose the seller? How do I know if the seller is genuine or fake? Does alibaba keep a list of trusted and registered companies?

3. If I have to import goods from other country to India, whats the maximum price of the good(s) that is exempted from customs and excise duty? How is customs duty calculated?

I am an International Trade Specialist, I think I can answer a few of your questions.  First of all one way to protect yourself is to get a irrevokable Letter of Credit from a major bank (one that does international L/C's).  This is basically a type of insurance that will normally cover about 90% of the sale amount if the buyer does not pay for correctly delivered goods. It also prevents the buyer from having to pay out money prior to recieving goods.  This is especially good for new business relationships.  I would not rely soley on a website to do your research for you. For imports I would contact one of the World Trade Center offices and have them do a background on your potential business partner.  Customs duties are based on the HS codes that correspond to the item you are buying.  You should probably speak to a liscensed customs broker to get your HS code.  Also note that you may be eligible for Duty Drawback if you pay duty on an item, make some changes to it and export it out again.  Most people are not aware that they are paying duty twice and fail to claim their money (90% is left unclaimed).

So if every person knows that's portion of the NTC, then what's there to argue over?
