Has anyone bought from wholesale website alibaba?

Question

I was shopping for a 2000 dollar item and found it online for only like 1000 on this wholesale chinese website ALIBABA

This is half price compared to US stores, tempting...

Is it worth the try or is it a scam?

It seems many alibaba sellers are scammers, but are there good ones too? anyone had luck and actually received their package?

What is the safest payment method to make it more safe?

Scammers know most people are intelligent enough to do a Google search about the company before doing any transaction with them. So some scammers use reputed company names to scam you. Most of mid level and small scale buyers do not go beyond the level of online contacts when making correspondence. Once we search about their company we will see only good things about them. That’s why we must always send money to business accounts. If the account name is different from the company name they are pretending, Red flag; Run away.

Alibaba itself is a great site it is a portal that businesses use to sell. I've tried tracking companies for wholesale on Alibaba, most don't respond in English, or it's broken English. As I recall, it is a wholesale site, I'd be very careful whom you deal with. Calling the source and finding out more information about them and what they require for you to buy the item. The number one question is: How do they guarantee that you will get the item? Have it sent COD. Pay the extra fees, make sure it's the right one before you give your check in the companies name. You don't want a box full of rocks, do you? Good luck.

Ofcourse alibaba and others like http://www.hellotrade.com etc. are very useful b2b websites. They bring the manufacturers, suppliers and buyers on a common platform. There may be some scammers too but most of them are authentic suppliers. You should prefer to pay the suppliers by credit card  or paypal only don't go for wire, western union, money order etc.
